In 1899
the first electric streetcar began service on the newly laid tracks around
the city of Nelson. Right away the tram was very popular. Public transit
at the turn of the century made Nelson a bustling town. People could live
farther up the hills and the tram soon followed. The total track length
was only 8 km but the city had three cars. In 1906 Nelson's Streetcar # 23
came into service on the streets of the Queen City. The electric streetcar
system served Nelson until 1949 when buses hit the streets
